Hello, CQC patients and my fellow sojourners on the adventure of healthy living!
I’m Dr. Coupet. With March being National Nutrition Month, I find it’s the perfect time to sit down and chat about what we’re putting into our bodies. We all understand the importance of nutrition, but with our busy lives, abundant food options, and revolving diet fads, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters in our diets!
Good nutrition is more than just a gateway to losing weight—it’s about making thoughtful, sustainable choices that boost our energy, enhance our well-being, and can be joyfully maintained for a lifetime.
Nutrition affects so many aspects of our lives! It powers our energy levels, influences our mood, supports our cognitive functions, defends against illnesses, and even affects the quality of our sleep.
At CQC, we focus not just on treating illness but on fostering wellness. Understanding the role of nutrition is a cornerstone of this approach. (Yes, I did over 12 years of medical training and research just to tell you that the best treatment is indeed prevention through good nutrition!)
A well-balanced diet rich in whole foods provides the steady energy we need to get through the day. This includes:
Simple dietary tweaks like choosing whole grains over refined ones, snacking on nuts (just don’t overdo it) instead of chips, and drinking lots of water can significantly lift your energy levels and mood.
Our diet plays a pivotal role in strengthening our immune system. Nutrients such as vitamin C, found in citrus fruits, zinc, found in seeds and nuts, and probiotics from fermented foods are vital in keeping our body’s defenses robust!
The brain, like any part of the body, requires proper nutrition to function optimally. Diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins are linked to improved brain health and can enhance focus and reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Think about this the next time you reach for that Adderall! (No judgment here; just saying.)
What we eat also impacts how well we sleep.
The last time you went to bed after a meal of heavy or rich foods, how did you sleep? That kind of food consumption can disrupt sleep, whereas a balanced diet helps regulate sleep cycles.
Include foods high in magnesium (almonds, dark chocolate, spinach, black beans, salmon, bananas) and potassium (bananas, dried fruit, citrus, spinach, sweet potatoes, broccoli) to help your body relax and get a more restful sleep!
Proper nutrition is critical in managing cholesterol levels, which can reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to help manage and lower bad cholesterol levels. Doing this complements other treatments, as we discussed in our blog about statins.
At CQC, we believe that improving your nutrition should not feel like a chore. Here are some practical, accessible ways to enhance your dietary habits:
Make small, achievable changes. Swap out an afternoon snack of chips for a fruit, or start your day with a whole-grain cereal instead of a refined one. These little swaps can lead to big health benefits over time.
A little planning can go a long way in maintaining healthy eating habits. Prepare healthy snacks in advance, plan your meals for the week, or even just think ahead about your next meal to prevent last-minute, less healthy choices.
Pay attention to how different foods make you feel. For a week, keep track in a small notepad! If, after eating certain foods, you notice that you feel sluggish or irritable, write that down. And then reduce those foods or find healthier alternatives. Conversely, when a meal leaves you feeling vibrant and full of energy, take notes and include similar meals more often.
Hydration is key for overall health. Drinking enough water can improve your skin, energy, and overall bodily functions. If you find water boring, add slices of fruit or cucumber or a splash of juice for flavor.
Good nutrition isn’t about forcing yourself to follow a strict diet or depriving yourself of every single food you love. It’s about finding a balance that fits your lifestyle, feels good, and is sustainable over the long term. It’s about making informed choices that nourish your body and enhance your life.
This National Nutrition Month, take a moment to reflect on your dietary habits.
Making small changes and sticking to them has a compound effect that really will transform your life. (Need convincing? Read or listen to The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy, available on Amazon.)
Remember, at Coupet Quality Clinic, we’re here to support you every step of the way—whether it’s managing cholesterol, enhancing your diet, or just feeling better in your day-to-day life. Let’s make this month the start of something great!
I’m Dr. Coupet, The People’s Doctor, committed to your health and well-being.
Until next time!
